Project Overview
Established in 1991, the National Scenic Byways Program recognizes roadways with notable scenic, historic, cultural, natural, recreational, and archaeological qualities.
In 2021, the Trail of the Ancients Byway of New Mexico was designated as a National Scenic Byway by the Federal Highway Administration. Maintaining byway designation is critical to drive regional tourism to the area. The goal is for the byway to be a backbone to bring in-state and out-of-state visitors to place-based businesses, artisans, and authentic sites along the route.
The Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway traverses the wildly diverse geological landscape of the Four Corners region. It is a route to prehistoric, archaeological, and geological sites of northwestern New Mexico, providing insight into the lives of the Ancestral Puebloans and the Navajo, Ute, and Apache peoples. The geological features along the trail include canyons, volcanic rock features, and sandstone buttes.
The Northwest New Mexico Council of Governments (COG) has received funding from the New Mexico Tourism Department and the US Department of Transportation to re-energize the Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway Association and update the Corridor Management Plan. Part of this effort will include updating the list of assets along the byway and developing marketing and economic development plans.

Project Website, Interactive Map, & Survey
To ease the ability for County residents to provide feedback for the CMP, a project website has been created which provided an overview of the plan and several related resources. An Interactive map has also been created and posted to the project website. Specific markers have been provided on the map where users can identify tourism assets and provide general comments. Users can also like and dislike comments left by other users.
